About John from Phoebe

Oktyabrina informed the following heartwarming stories about John (thanks again!):

some information about John from Peter Freestone
http://www.freddiemercury.com/institutional/ask
Peter "Phoebe" Freestone answers questions from fans as well as posting personal memories and photos from his many years as Freddie's personal assistant.

I quote:

"Melinda and many others have asked what Freddie's relationship with John Deacon was like.

When John joined Queen Freddie sort of took John under his wing, to try to protect him from the extremes of the rock and roll lifestyle as Freddie felt John was the most innocent of the group. They became very good friends and Freddie was very happy when John found stability in the form of his wife Veronica. They would work closely in the studio and you will notice that there are a couple of Deacon/Mercury compositions as John felt that they would not have happened without Freddie's input. Freddiefs ill health affected John greatly as he felt powerless to help his friend and I believe that is one of the reasons behind John leaving the music business in 1997.

Ian wanted to know what Freddie would say about John's absence from the band now.

That is a very difficult question as it never arose during Freddie's lifetime. Knowing Freddie as I did, I would say he would just think, that is what he wants to do, then that is what will happen. Freddie never pressurized anyone into doing something they didn't want to do. Everyone was free to make up their own mind. I'm sure if Freddie was still with us, Queen would also be with us with John, still making wonderful music. John has decided he has had enough of that and left the music behind. I still enjoy seeing Brian and Roger making music, because that is what they want to do."
